As an example, I believe Victor Vran devs made their own engine and it runs great (on my machine). Some devs chose a different path altogether. Engine devs have to balance performance and ease of use and Epic chose a little more performance over user-friendliness. I think that 'little less user-friendly' part is what's stopping it from replacing Unity. In this regard Unreal Engine is a little less user-friendly but much more optimized. Unity's great for simple (graphics-wise) games like Pillars of Eternity and Shadowrun but when it comes to more complex games - performance drops significantly. Unfortunately, that also means they had to sacrifice some performance in the process. Unity has been developed with user-friendliness and ease-of-use in mind. |
